| Dangjin is at the upper north end of Chungnam Province with Pyeongtaek and Hwaseong to the north with the Asan bay in between, Asan to the east along with River Shapkyo in between, Yesan to the south. Dangjin is surrounded by the sea of 2/3 of total county boundary. Consisting mainly of wide field areas connected to low hills and small mountains, Dangjin County is traditionally known for its vast areas of farming fields. Dangjin is of a rectangular shape with longer distance from east to west than that from south to north. Dangjin with 2 towns and 10 subcounties is occupying the 664.79 square kilometer, which stand at the 7.7 of the total territory of south Chungcheong province. Its population is 128,665 with 51,698 households as of June, 2007. |

Dangjin County displays mild-seasonal winds and continental climate. Dangjin County has gentle climate with four distinctive seasonal variations. Dangjin County is under influence of northwesterly wind in winter and southeasterly wind in summer. The average spring temperature is -1.5¡ÆC, slightly higher than that of neighboring areas excluding big cities. The average summer temperature is 23.3¡ÆC, lower than Buyeo's 23.8¡ÆC, and 1¡ÆC lower than Daejeon's 24.3¡ÆC
The county's name Dangjin means "Big ferry that operated to and from Dang Dynasty," and the history traces back to the Three States where trading with China. The harbor is a century old, and is naturally the best place to reach China and northern continents. Also, Dangjin is situated within an hour distance away from Metropolitan area West Cost Highway and local highway #34, #38. Its favorable condition of location and convenient traffic network enable the city to accommodate high technology industries.
In March, 2007, the number of companies registered in Dangjin is 7,578 and the employees numbered 34,745. Globally recognized enterprises like Hyundai Steel Co., were the main contributors to Dangjin¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Dangjin¡¯s trade volume recorded US$2,384 Million with US$794 Million in export and US$1,590 Million in import.
Dangjin holds a wide array of spectacular natural environments including Oemok village, where one can see the sunrise, sunset and moon-rise at one place, and more than 2 million people visit annually. Since early times, Dangjin has produced the best quality agricultural specialties from this gifted land with abundant sunlight, adequate rain and fertile soil. Especially, Dangjin rice, grown in the pristine area, takes pride in the feature of the high glutinousness.
With a priority on the enhancement of quality of life, and a starting point of the new Silk Road to China, Dangjin will develop into a world-class ocean tourism logistics city which can contribute the Korean economy. |
